The Nebelung Cat is a medium-sized breed known for its medium long shimmering blue coat. Probably the best way to describe these cats is to say they are long!

They have long bodies, long graceful necks, long legs, and long plumed tails. The modified wedge-shaped head is topped with large pointed ears that have tufts of fur.

Slightly oval, widely spaced eyes of yellowish-green or green color, complete the look.

This affectionate, sweet and loving cat is highly devoted to its family. They tend to pick their special person.

However, they, remain affectionate with other family members as well.

This is an intelligent and playful cat who likes to be petted. The Nebelung is a creature of habit and needs some time to adapt to changes in its routine and surroundings.

What Does a Nebelung Cat Look Like?

The medium-sized Nebelung is an elegant but muscular cat. Its overall appearance is that of a long, sturdy, and well-muscled cat with a long fully plumed tail.

The Nebelung has a modified wedge-shaped head, medium length muzzle, and puffy whisker pads. The large tufted ears and slightly oval green eyes complete the appearance of these cats.

Its most notable trait is a medium-long blue coat, that flows luxuriously over the body.

Breed History

The Nebelung is a newer cat breed developed in the mid 1980s in Denver, Colorado. The breed’s story began when a black shorthaired female and a black longhaired male produced a litter of three.

One of the shorthaired black female kittens was given to Cora Cobb’s son who named her Elsa.

In 1984, Elsa produced a litter of her own with the help of a Russian Blue type tomcat. Elsa’s litter of six included one longhaired male kitten with a striking blue coat. Cobb decided to keep this kitten and named him Siegfried.

The next year, Elsa and the same tomcat produced another litter, that now contained a female blue longhaired kitten.

Cobb decided to adopt her as well and named her Brunhilde.

In 1985 Cobb moved to El Paso, Texas and brought Siegfried and Brunhilde with her.

She was delighted when in 1986 Brunhilde accepted her brother as a mate and produced a litter of three kittens. All three kittens possessed the same body type and shimmering blue coats of their parents.

Cobb decided to name the new breed Nebelung which translates to ‘creatures of the mist‘.

Furthermore, she reached out to TICA’s geneticist Dr. Solveig Pflueger for guidance in establishing her new breed. In 1987, The International Cat Association accepted the Nebelung for registration and gave the breed the championship status in 1997.

Today, the Nebelung Cat is recognized as a new breed by the American Cat Fanciers Association, the World Cat Federation and other organizations as well.

Size Standards

This is a medium-sized cat with a long, well-proportioned and muscled body. Ideally, the tail needs to be equal to the body length from rump to shoulder blades.

How Big Do Nebelung Cats Get?

As with all other cat breeds, males are slightly larger and weigh from 9-14 pounds. Females are smaller and weigh from 7-9 pounds.

These cats need to eat protein-rich food in order to stay in shape. However, they are picky eaters. So you might have trouble finding the food your cat likes. Feed your cat according to her age and activity level in order to maintain a healthy weight.

Nebelung Cat Personality Traits

The Nebelung is an affectionate, loyal and highly intelligent breed.

They are very devoted to their family members and form long-lasting bonds. However, they will pick a special person with whom they will spend most time.

Still, they will remain loyal and affectionate towards all family members. These cats love to follow their owners and are always close by. They enjoy being petted and pampered and love to nest in their owners laps.

Because it has eyes only for its owner, the Nebelung is a bit reserved towards strangers. When meeting new people every Nebelung acts differently. Therefore, some cats will run and hide under the bed, while others will warily observe guests from a safe distance.

This is a playful and moderately active cat that likes playing with puzzle toys.

Since they are very clever, they can be easily trained to perform tricks and to walk on a leash. So, make sure that you find a harness your cat likes in order to take her for walks.

The Nebelung is a gentle and quiet breed that will use its voice only when something is seriously wrong. Therefore, your cat will let you know if she finds her new food unappealing, or if her litter box isn’t clean enough.

Being a creature of habit, the Nebelung doesn’t like change and is a stickler for routine. This is a gentle breed that needs a lot of love and a peaceful home to thrive.

Nebelung Cat Temperament

This gentle, quiet, and shy breed has a somewhat reserved nature. However, they love to play and enjoy being close to their people.

They also know how to keep busy when you are at work and will find ways to entertain themselves. The Nebelung has a subtle sense of humor that will never fail to entertain you.

This breed has a strong sense of self-worth and won’t appreciate being mocked or unappreciated. While it may take some time to develop a relationship with a Nebelung, your cat will reward you with extreme loyalty.

Nebelung Cat Behavioral Problems

The Nebelung is a sensitive cat and it doesn’t like to be ignored.

They expect to receive the same amount of affection and attention they give, otherwise, they will feel offended.

If not provided with enough attention your cat can become anxious or fearful. Thus, consider how much time and attention you will be able to give to a Nebelung before you get one.

If you can’t devote yourself completely, you should consider getting a more independent cat breed.

Adaptability

The Nebelung Cat likes a set routine and has troubles adjusting to change. Therefore, these cats are best suited for people with stable lifestyles.

These cats can have troubles adjusting to a new home, and can become depressed if you suddenly have to shift because of a new job.

To help your cat deal with change, play with her regularly and show her affection. Furthermore, early socialization can help your cat become more adaptable once she grows up.

This is a moderately active breed that enjoys spending her days sleeping in soft cat beds. Hence you will have to spend some time every day playing with your cat to keep her healthy. Get your cat moving by playing with her and get a cat tree to help her stay in great shape.

Health and Potential Health Problems

The Nebelung is considered to be a healthy breed without any serious health issue. That’s why it is a great choice for people who want to avoid long-term medical costs.

To keep your cat healthy take her to regular vet-check-ups and keep her up-to-date on vaccinations. The only thing you should be wary about when it comes to this breed is the following health issue.

  • Bladder Stones: These are rock-like deposits of minerals, crystals and organic matter that are found in a cat’s bladder. Larger stones block urethra and interfere with a cat’s ability to urinate. Symptoms can include blood in urine, painful and frequent urination and strain while urinating. This condition can affect all cat breeds and treatment varies depending on the severity of the case. Surgery may be necessary to remove the stone.

It contains all the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals packed into a tasty formula that will entice your cat into eating every meal.

Nebelung Cat Lifespan

The Nebelung Cat has an average lifespan of 11-16 years. However, with proper care, these cats can live over 18 years.

Monitor your cat’s water consumption in order to prevent urinary problems and bladder stones. You can trick your cat into drinking more water with a water fountain or by feeding wet cat food.

Grooming Needs

These cats have a medium-long coat that drapes over their bodies. The coat length increases from the shoulder area all the way to the tail.

Most male cats have a glorious neck ruff. The fur is longest on the tail, forming a full plume. The soft two-layered coat needs to be brushed twice a week. Use a stainless steel comb to remove loose hair and distribute skin oils through the length of fur.

The Nebelung can develop mats and tangles if not groomed regularly. Hence, don’t skip regular grooming sessions.

The Nebelung Cat’s glorious coat sheds moderately all year round. Thus, this breed may not be the best choice if you don’t want to clean cat hair all the time.

Keep in mind that the Nebelung goes through the shedding season, and will lose even more hair during spring and fall.

This lightweight steel comb is perfect for fatigue-free grooming.

Nebelung Cat Coat Colors

The shimmering blue medium-length coat of the Nebelung Cat is its most distinctive trait.

The coat is sound blue all the way to the roots and has a lustrous sheen. The soft downy undercoat is lighter blue in contrast to harsher guard hair of the outer layer.

Compatibility with Children and Other Pets

This shy and quiet cat needs time to warm up to people. However, when it does, the Nebelung makes a loving and affectionate companion.

They are best suited for homes with children older than six years of age. Being quiet and calm, the Nebelung doesn’t like the hustle and bustle smaller children are bound to make. However, they get along nicely with older kids who know how to respect and properly pet a cat.

This breed gets along with older pets who are calm and collected and won’t constantly seek a buddy to play with.

Once a Nebelung overcomes the initial shyness and gets to know you, it will become a playful and energetic cat. They love interacting with their owners and enjoy chasing and batting at toys. Therefore, get a feather teaser and play with your cat every day for at least 15 minutes.
