The Ukrainian Levkoy Cat is a recently developed hairless breed with folded ears. This is a medium-sized cat with a long, muscular and slender body. Their body is supported by long and well-boned legs that end with oval paws and fine toes.

The modified wedge-shaped head is topped with widely set large ears that fold forward towards the head. Their large almond-shaped eyes are slanted and can come in any color.

The Levkoy is a friendly and affectionate cat that likes to follow its people in a dog-like fashion. This is a moderately active cat that likes to play and interact with its owners.

Due to the lack of fur, they need to be kept indoors only and protected from the heat or cold weather.

Generally, these cats get along with everyone and are well suited for homes with other pets.

What Does a Ukrainian Levkoy Cat Look Like?

This is a medium-sized breed with a long and slender, yet muscular body. They have long well-boned legs, fine long toes and flexible tails.

The head has a modified wedge shape with a rather low forehead and long and flat skull. Prominent cheekbones and eyebrows form angular outlines to the head.

The head is topped with widely-based large rounded ears that fold forward towards the head without touching it. Levkoys have large almond-shaped eyes that are slanted and can come in any color, as long as it is deep and vivid.

The breed’s soft and elastic skin can be completely hairless or have peach-like invisible hair on the muzzle, legs and tail. Some cats have excess skin which causes a wrinkled appearance that contributes to the overall unusual look of this breed.

Breed History

The Ukrainian Levkoy is a recently man-made breed that originated in Ukraine. In 2004, in the Crimean province in Ukraine, experimental breeding took place. Elena Biriukova crossed a female hairless Donskoy Cat with a male Scottish Fold.

The result of that breeding was a unique looking hairless cat with folded ears. Both traits are the result of a naturally occurring mutation and are caused by dominant genes. Thus, all these cats will be bald, which isn’t the case with the rest of hairless cat breeds.

The Oriental Shorthair Cats and domestic cats were also used in the breeding program to broaden the gene pool and improve the breed’s health. This breed is still in the developing stages.

In 2005, the Ukrainian Levkoy was recognized in Ukraine by ICFA RUI (Rolandus Union Internationale). In 2010 this breed was also recognized in Russia by ICFA WCA.

Thus, these cats can compete in shows and ten of them have already gained show titles.

However, at the time of writing this, the Ukrainian Levkoy is still not recognized by any other major cat organization and is in developing stages. This breed was named after the Levkoy plant, which has bent leaves that look a lot like this cat’s ears.

Size Standards

The Ukrainian Levkoy should be medium in size. The body is medium to long, muscular and slender, and gives this breed agile appearance.

How Big Do Ukrainian Levkoy Cats Get?

As with all other cat breeds, males are slightly larger and typically weigh from 11-15 pounds. Females are smaller and weigh from 7-12 pounds.

You can teach your cat how to retrieve, come, sit or stay, or an array of other tricks you might find amusing.

However, as they get older, they lose that playful spark and become docile and less energetic.

They are a balanced and mentally stable breed who rarely develop any behavioral problems in a loving home.

While they don’t mind being alone for short periods, if you have long working hours, your Levkoy will appreciate having a companion pet. So consider getting a pair of cats who can keep each other company while you are away.
