Where Did Ukrainian Levkoy Cat Breed Originate?
The Ukrainian Levkoy is a recently man-made breed that originated in Ukraine. In 2004, in the Crimean province in Ukraine, experimental breeding took place. Elena Biriukova crossed a female hairless Donskoy Cat with a male Scottish Fold.
The result of that breeding was a unique looking hairless cat with folded ears. Both traits are the result of a naturally occurring mutation and are caused by dominant genes. Thus, all these cats will be bald, which isn’t the case with the rest of hairless cat breeds.
The Oriental Shorthair Cats and domestic cats were also used in the breeding program to broaden the gene pool and improve the breed’s health. This breed is still in the developing stages.
In 2005, the Ukrainian Levkoy was recognized in Ukraine by ICFA RUI (Rolandus Union Internationale). In 2010 this breed was also recognized in Russia by ICFA WCA.
Thus, these cats can compete in shows and ten of them have already gained show titles.
